American band from New Jersey, formed in 1964 by brothers Robert “Kool” and Ronald Bell, with Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, Robert Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, and Ricky West. Kool & the Gang became one of the most influential funk bands during the ‘70s, and one of the most popular R&B groups of the ‘80s after their breakout hit “Celebration” in 1979.

Some of their most successful albums include “Ladies’ Night”, “Celebrate!”, and “Emergency”, with hit singles such as “Ladies’ Night”, “Celebration”, “Get Down on It”, “Joanna”, and “Cherish”. The band continues to perform worldwide, including as a support for Van Halen in 2012 and their fiftieth anniversary tour in 2014.

Kool & the Gang have won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards. In 2018, the Bells, Brown, and Taylor were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Their discography includes 23 studio albums and almost 70 singles. They have sold 7.5 million and 4.5 million albums and singles in the US.
