Roseanne Cash is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist known for country hits like “Tennessee Flat Top Box” and “Seven Year Ache.” Her music is deeply personal, and melds country music with pop and rock genres. She is the eldest daughter of famous country singer Johnny Cash, with whom she went on tour following her high school graduation in 1973. Cash did not intend to become a musician, but agreed to record a debut album when approached by the German record label Ariola. Roseanne Cash was released in 1978 in Germany, and while it was not wildly successful in the U.S., it did get noticed by Columbia Records, who gave her a contract shortly after.
Cash’s first American album, Right or Wrong, was released in 1979 to some success. The album was produced by country musician Rodney Crowell, who would later become Cash’s husband. Cash’s next album, Seven Year Ache, was her breakthrough. Three singles from that 1981 album went on to top country charts: “Seven Year Ache,” “Blue Moon with Heartache,” and “My Baby Thinks He’s a Train.”
Cash took a punk-rock turn for her third album, Rhythm & Romance (1985), which yielded two more number one country hits, and garnered the Grammy Award for best female country vocal performance for “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me.” Cash produced four more hit singles following this album, including “Runaway Train,” and “Tennessee Flat Top Box.”
After moving to New York City in the mid 1990s, Cash signed with Capitol Records. Following her recovery from vocal polyps, she recorded two well-received albums, Rules of Travel (2003), and Black Cadillac (2006), which dealt with the loss of her parents. The River & the Thread (2014) was inspired by trips to Arkansas in support of a project to restore Cash’s father’s boyhood home. The album won the Grammy for best Americana album, and “A Feather’s Not a Bird” won best American roots performance and best American roots song.
Cash released her most recent album, She Remembers Everything, in 2018, which features artists like Kris Kristofferson and Elvis Costello. She gives live performances regularly and is available for corporate entertainment bookings and private parties.
