Shaina Twain, born Eilleen Regina Edwards, is a Canadian Musician whose blend of country melodies and pop vocals made her one of the most well-liked crossover artists of the mid-1990s.
Twain developed musical talents from a very young age. By eight years old, she was using performing in clubs to help out her struggling parents, and in high school she sang with a popular cover band called Longshot. At 21, Twain moved to Toronto, working by day and singing in clubs by night. After her parents were killed in a car accident, she returned home to raise her three younger siblings.
In 1991, Twain’s club performances caught the eye of producer Norro Wilson, who brought her to Nashville where she recorded her first album. She changed her name from Eilleen to Shania, which means “I’m on my way” in the Ojibwa language, an homage to her stepfather’s heritage. Shania Twain, her first album, was met with lukewarm commercial success, but was noticed by producer Robert John Lange, who had previously produced albums for the likes of Def Leppard and Bryan Adams. The two began writing songs together, and were married shortly afterward.
Twain’s second album, The Woman in Me (1995), was met with both critical and commercial success. It sold over 18 million copies and snagged the Grammy Award for country album of the year. Her third album, Come on Over (1997), was also wildly popular, selling over 10 million copies add making Twain the best-selling female country musician. Twain’s highly anticipated 2002 album, Up!, was a double album featuring both country and pop versions of her songs.
Twain went on hiatus during her highly publicized divorce with Lange, but followed it with a starring appearance in the reality series Why Not? With Shania Twain and an autobiography From This Moment On. She was also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2011, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Twain is regularly booked for corporate entertainment events and private parties. Her most recent album, Now, was released to chart-topping success in 2017, and she currently enjoys a successful career performing across the country and she world.
